On Location – Topeka

I'm in Topeka today doing some rather boring work. Twice a year I come up and do some copy work for the Kansas Press Association. It's a job I started doing when I lived here. The fall's job include photographing the winning entries for the KPA's ad contest. It only takes me about two hours to breeze through the entries, putting one up at a time on a tack board, snapping two frames and then taking it back down. Wash, rinse, repeat. About 100 times. It's only slightly complicated in that I used two lights to strobe each entry and so ocassionally I have to check the back of the camera to make sure my exposures are still accurate.

While pouring through the entries today (I don't normally read much of the ad contest. The editorial contest in the spring, on the other hand, takes me about twice as long to get through because I read about half of the entries), I found this ad for the Shepherd Team Auto Plaza in Fort Scott.

I tried so hard to get away from this place when we lived here but it seems I end up back in Topeka more than any other city for what freelance work I can muster. I'm not complaining. I know my way around the city and it's kinda fun to see what's changed. You could argue that Topeka started to progress right about the time we left. I'm having lunch at a cool place called Wrap City Grill in downtown. It's located on a corner storefront that used to serve as the hub of the city bus transit system. I remember pedestrians everywhere and big, loud and smoky buses clogging the intersection. A few years ago the city built a new transit terminal in a less conspicuous location and this place sat empty for awhile. It's good to see a local business in its place. What's better is that it has wireless internet!

3:51 p.m. and I'm back in Wichita. Just enough time to kick off my shoes and relax for a few minutes before we head out to scout some houses with our realtor. I usually don't mind driving across town, but after being in the car for four hours today, I'm not really looking forward to it.
