Today's Front Pages

Among the Web sites I visit daily is a Newseum gallery called Today's Front Pages. It features a map view and list view of front pages of newspapers around the country and around the world. I prefer the map view. By scrolling over each dot on the map, you can see a thumbnail of that city's newspaper for that day. By clicking on the dot you can get a full-screen view of the page. From there you can even download a readable PDF.

There are a few papers I check everyday, including The Muskegon Chronicle and The Gazette in Colorado Springs. Both are papers at which I interned. Other favorites include The Des Moines Register and The Daytona Beach News-Journal as both are papers at which some of my best friends work. It's always a treat to see their photos occasionally displayed prominently on A1.

Other times I'll check out pages from regions where significant news events have happened to see how the papers in the area carried that news. Other times, I just want to see what life is like in another part of the country.

There's only a couple of things that I don't care for about the site. It only archives the front pages of events considered to be of historical significance. The news junkie in me wants to be able to flip back through the last 30 days of a paper to see how it carried a local story from day-to-day. Also, it's up to each paper to submit its pages. Muskegon didn't participate until I emailed the editor and asked them to consider. Once every couple of weeks or so, someone forgets to send in the page.

I'm often asked if I miss working at a newspaper. Just when I'm on this site.
