Angie and Mike's Blog

Angie and I made a quick tript to KC on Tuesday to see a Royals game with friends Brian and Erin. Angie and Brian are friends from high school and recently reconnected after discovering that he had moved back to Kansas following a stint in the Navy. We met up at an Overland Park Wal-Mart and then shared a ride to the stadium, where we follwed our shadows into The K.


Brian and Erin have a daughter, Allie, who's two and about as cute as can be!

Speaking of birds, I wonder if this is the same bird that keeps sneaking into my photos. I have other images (from Florida and Arizona) with a random bird floating through the frame. It's hard to see, but notice a small black spec in the upper left-center portion of the sky. Click on the picture to see it a bit larger.


As for the game, the Royals won! I don't know that I've ever seen a game at The K in which the home team won. It was a nice treat as were the post-game fireworks.


We spent the night at Brian and Erin's cute little house in Lawrence. I had no idea they had a dog! And a big dog, at that. This is Milo, whose head is about the size of Harley. She's sweet as can be, though. Before we left, we had lunch with Nick, a former co-worker from Topeka and a current photographer at the Journal-World but I have no good reason why I don't have any photos from a lunch with a photographer. Maybe next time. Considering Angie has finally come around and will go to Lawrence, there will definitely be a next time.

We often refer to Harley as our "dog baby" and it's common for many couples to get a dog before having children. Harley watched intently Saturday as Angie was working on a diaper cake for an upcoming baby shower. I joked that we should practice by putting one on Harley, who tolerates more than her fair share of antagonizing. She put up with this, too, which provided us with a good laugh.

Just like her daddy, Harley isn't interested in Harry Potter but she'll cuddle up next to her momma while she reads the second book, which she finished today. She tries to tell me some of the story, but I just plug my ears and start singing, "La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

We received a post card in the mail this past week reminding us that it's time to take Harley back to the groomers. Really?

As I mentioned in the previous post, Harley spent the night last night with Grandma and Grandpa Shepherd so that Angie and I could take in a couple of movies at the drive-in. As the locusts buzzed in the nearby treeline as the sun started to creep below the horizon, I was reminded of some of the cool things that Wichita has to offer. Wichitans tend to complain that there is little to do here but having lived in smaller towns before returning home, I can tell you that Wichita has a lot to offer, including the Starlite (formerly Landmark) Drive-In. It's a hidden gem (or diamond in the rough) that I hope people continue to visit so that it doesn't go away (say, like our failed theme parks and professional baseball team.)


I made a few snaps of our surroundings but I didn't try too hard. We parked in row 8.


The movies are broadcast on FM frequencies and through old school speakerboxes. With a couple hundred speakerboxes throughout the theater, you don't really need to listen to it on the radio.


We need to start doing more self-portraits. We used to do them all the time.

Harley spent the night with Grandma and Grandpa Shepherd last night so Angie and I could have a date to the drive in. They had never seen her newest trick, which we named groundhog. But as it turns out, Harley doesn't look anything like a groundhog. Grandpa Shepherd said that because she lives in Kansas she should be called a prairie dog. We looked up pictures of groundhogs and prairie dogs on the Internet today and, sure enough, she doesn't look anything like a groundhog. So, here's to Harley-hoo, our little prairie dog.

(Either way she's still frickin' cute and has us wrapped around her little paws!)

Angie and I worked tirelessly to teach Harley her newest trick called "groundhog." we worked with her earlier this year in hopes of having it mastered for Groundhog Day to no avail. But, we figured that she'd learn to sit like that on her own if we held a treat over her nose. It worked too good. Now every time we're eating ANYTHING she sits by the end of the coffee table doing groundhog in hopes of scoring a bite. Of course we've tried to teach her NOT to do it, but like that's going to work! We let her get away with anything; we're permissive puppy parents. Our kids WILL have rules ... and manners! It's been one year since we adopted Harley. Right now Angie's in the kitchen with Antonio making some special dog cookies. Just listening to them, you'd think we'd just adopted Harley last week! Here's a shot of her from yesterday. She was lying on the bed in her room soakin' up some rays. She rested her head on a stuffed cow not too far away from her bone. I knew if I got up to get the camera she'd move so I made this quick snap with my cell phone.

We've yet to see The Simpsons Movie but we're completely hooked by the Simpsonize Me! web site! It's really a Burger King marketing ploy, as it will clearly tell you on the site, but it's fun nonetheless! This is what Angie, Callie, Aaron and I would look like if we were little yellow people. Angie insists that my Simpson likeness is the best! What do you think?
